The FEDERATION OF AFRICAN MEDIA WOMEN ZIMBABWE (FAMWZ) board and the Secretriat extend their heartfelt condolences to the Moyo family, on the untimely and tragic passing on of Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) Current Affairs manager, Freedom Moyo, in the early hours of Tuesday, 17th January 2012. Moyo was involved in a car accident on Saturday morning and was admitted at the West End clinic where he passed on.We received with shock and profound sadness the news of Freedom Moyo’s death.Moyo was an outstanding senior journalist who was very popular among his peers and had a very successful career in journalism. He cut his teeth in journalism as the ZBC Bureau Chief for Matebeleland South province before moving to Matabeleland North province in the same capacity. He was later promoted and became ZBC’s Manager for Bulletins in Harare before later becoming the Current Affairs manager, a position he held until his death. He will be sorely missed by all in the journalism field and we pray that the comforting spirit of the Lord be with his family and friends during this difficult time.
Underwritten by Africa's only continental umbrella association of media owners and operators, the African Media Initiative (AMI), the fund is designed to kickstart experimentation with new technologies. Winners will receive seed grants ranging from $12,500 to a maximum of $100,000 for more ambitious projects. To ensure that grantees build robust business models, winners will also receive technical advice and start-up support, as well as one-on-one mentoring from some of the world’s leading media experts. The contest will target solutions to technology challenges facing African media, including ways to strengthen data-based investigative journalism, audience engagement, mobile news distribution, data visualization, revenue streams and workflow systems. AMI will launch the contest website in December 2011. In the first phase, African journalists and publishers will be asked to identify the most pressing challenges facing the industry. Once these have been identified, AMI will issue a call for applications targeting these issues in February 2012. Winners will be chosen through a rigorous two-phase judging process, consisting of public voting and a review of finalists by a panel of experts. The top contenders will receive a combination of cash and technical support. Winners will then test their innovations in AMI member-newsrooms and showcase projects at international media gatherings. The African innovation contest is part of AMI’s broader initiative to build digital entrepreneurship within traditional media. AMI is also supporting a new network of HacksHackers.com chapters across Africa that will bring technologists together with journalists to help pilot projects in digital media. The chapters will run workshops and help incubate ideas for the African News Innovation Challenge. ANIC is supported by Google, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the Knight Foundation, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Omidyar Network, the US State Department, and the World Association of Newspapers & News Producers (WAN-IFRA).

The Federation of African Media Women Zimbabwe (FAMWZ) is a non-governmental organisation that was established in 1985.It was set up as a voluntary association of women working in both the print and electronic media. Its formation was out of the realisation that women were not only being marginalised in the mainstream media and publishing activities but also that for along time, issues of critical importance to women were trivialised.
From 1985, FAMWZ’s work primarily focused on empowering media women through training and advocacy on issues affecting them.FAMWZ later broadened its focus to work with grassroots communities in Mashonaland and Matabeleland. The Development Through radio (DTR) project, a key success story not only for the organisation but also the grassroots women, helped provide rural women with a voice and a forum in development.
With the growth of the organisation and the dynamism of the operating environment, FAMWZ re-positioned itself strategically to retain its relevance in development. In line with this, the organisation went through an Organisational Development (OD) process, which helped steer it to a new lease of life through redefining its identity, vision and goals. The OD process also resulted in FAMWZ undergoing gender mainstreaming to strengthen its gender advocacy role as well as the adoption of HIV and Aids as a central six-year theme around its programming.
